Salbei Hydrolat – Wirkung und Anwendungshinweise

Sage hydrolate - effect and instructions for use

The oldest records of the healing properties of sage date back more than 4000 years. The ancient Egyptians already used the medicinal herb intensively in the treatment of serious diseases and epidemics. In the tombs of the pharaohs, sage was found as one of the most important ingredients in the mixture for embalming. At that time, sage was used as a remedy for almost all diseases: to lower body temperature, as a medicine for headaches, to treat inflammation of the throat, in the oral cavity and respiratory tract, as well as for inflammation of the urinary tract and bladder.

Before the discovery of antibiotics in 1928, the importance of sage, due to its wide range of healing, was enormous. The famous botanist Sebastian Kneipp wrote about sage "who has a little garden, should plant sage in it, because if you have it - you have a natural pharmacy always at hand".

The effect of sage hydrolate

Sage hydrolate has astringent, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antispasmodic and tonic effects. Due to the contained essential oil, sage hydrolate has an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria, viruses (including herpes virus) and fungi. The bitter substances contained excite the bitter receptors at the base of the tongue, which leads to an increase in saliva and gastric juice production, thus promoting digestion. At the same time, the essential oil of sage hydrosol irritates the stomach wall, causing a slight increase in gastric and intestinal motility.

Application of sage hydrolate

The application of sage hydrolate is varied. It can be taken internally for flatulence, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, digestive weakness as well as constipation. Applied externally, it helps with bronchitis, cough, hoarseness, colds, bad breath, oral mucosa inflammation and pharyngitis. For external wounds and ailments such as eczema, poorly healing wounds, insect bites, hair loss as well as skin diseases, the anti-inflammatory effect helps in healing.

Dosage and side effects

Take 1-3 tablespoons daily (max. 5 tablespoons.). As a compress or poultice at its own discretion. Side effects are usually only in case of overdose or prolonged use. However, when used externally as a hydrolate, side effects are not expected.
