Clary sage was one of the most important sacred plants for the ancient Celts. The intoxicating effect of the clary sage was used to aromatise wine as well as other beverages. Today the plant is cultivated mainly in the Mediterranean. The smell of clary sage is sweet, warm and nutty-herby. The oil generally has a psychologically uplifting effect and helps alleviate nervous tensions.
